The "Wuxi Finger Hold" from the movie Kung Fu Panda is a move that could defeat any other move in the practice of Kung Fu. Social media users are now using it to describe anything that could usually defeat any other certain thing. I give this meme a 5.3.

The "Jennifer Lawrence Controversy" sparked when Jennifer Lawrence, wearing a revealing Versace dress, was pictured with the rest of the cast of Red Sparrow, who were wearing warm coats and layers. Many people saw this as an opportunity to express their views on feminism- Lawrence shut them down quickly. She explained that she loved the dress and would not dare to cover its beauty with a coat. Adding to that, she said they were only outside for five minutes. This is not a meme but I give this a 1; however, I give Lawrence's response a 10.
Professional photographers are bringing their models into craft stores such as Hobby Lobby and Joann's Fabrics to challenge themselves to take high quality pictures. So far, I've only seen "backdrops" of flowers. The "#hobbylobbychallenge" is an interesting meme, but apparently store employees become irritated when challenge-seekers take pictures around the store. I give this meme a 7.3 because I enjoy a challenge and photography.
Zero Deaths is a catchphrase associated with popular Let’s Player PewDiePie. While playing certain video games, Pewdiepie will repeat “zero deaths,” fake-bragging about how he’s so good at video games that his character never dies when he plays. Oftentimes, he repeats the mantra in videos where he’s seen dying multiple times. I give this meme a 4.5 because it is pretty comical to watch him die several times.
I have never seen this meme before and hate the word "homo" but here we go. The "Later Homo" meme was born when Redditor swiftskill posted a picture of a textbook diagram the final stage homosapiens evolved into. Instead of interpreting "later" as final or later, users imagined it as a term of goodbye. Now the meme is an offensive goodbye paired with a corresponding caption. I give this meme a 5.0 because again a middle ground exists. The content is comical but also offensive.
The "Financially Stable" meme spawned when Twitter felt the need to make fun of a woman who worked hard for her success. Although the meme is often comical, Gonzalez most likely worked her ass off to get where she is now and people are comparing her to Shrek, Club Penguin, and other animations like those listed. I love that Gonzalez is so successful; she gives me hope for our generation. Hopefully she continues to succeed. I give this meme a 5.0 because it is kind of a middle ground for me. The meme itself is pretty funny but I hope the various parody posts are not affecting her negatively.
The "Google Wants to Know Your Location" meme is pretty fresh. Unlike most memes, this one did not originate in the 2000s. The earliest trackable usage of this meme is January 14, 2018 on Reddit. I love this meme so much and have not found an uncomical version of it yet. I give this meme a 7.5.
The Obamas' portraits are official portraits of former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama revealed at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery on February 12th, 2018. The pictures were joked about online: Barack’s for depicting the former president in front of a leafy background, and Michelle’s for bearing little resemblance in some’s eyes to the former First Lady. I personally think that the portraits are iconic and I really enjoy Barack's. I give the portraits a 9.5 and not a 10 because the lack of similarity in Michelle's portrait to her actual face.
Why take the time to cut construction paper and glue on hearts when you can simply apply a fun image and caption to a solid color background? The "Valentines Day E-Cards" meme has been around since I was in middle school, and it has yet to disappoint me. Most of the captions have puns and other jokes that relate to the picture included on the e-card. I give Valentines Day E-Cards an 8.9.
“You So Precious When You Smile” is a video remix series often
using the “Be Mine” Snapchat lens, which is used to express love or ironic appreciation toward a celebrity, fictional character or crush in clips dubbed with the 2017 R&B song “Mine” by Bazzi. |
